The calendar is the brainchild of Bethan Darwin, a founding partner in Cardiff legal firm Darwin Gray Solicitors, who is married to the Crusaders’ chief executive David Thompson. She got the idea after going out to celebrate the Crusaders winning a place in the Super League last month. “I took some photos of the celebrations and sent them round to friends,” said Bethan. “The females who saw them all came back saying ‘wow - those boys are fit!’ That made me think we should perhaps exploit it a little and a calendar seemed too good an opportunity to pass up.” Bethan recruited another law firm – M&A Solicitors - and Gambit Corporate Finance to sponsor the calendar alongside Darwin Gray and the Crusaders players were only too happy to swap their rugby shirts for Cancer Care Cymru T-shirts. “As one of the players put it, the Crusaders are looking for more supporters from Wales and in turn wanted to show their support for a Welsh charity,” she added. “It was a bit of fun with a serious edge to it. Cancer Care Cymru seemed a very appropriate beneficiary as the Crusaders’ coach John Dixon is in remission from prostate cancer. But the players enjoyed it and the photographs are outstanding – it’s a really good calendar and is going to make a valuable contribution to a very worthy cause.” Cancer Care Cymru chief executive Debbie Whiteley said: “The boys were great sports. This is a terrific fundraising idea, and it’s been a real team effort putting it together, so huge thanks to Darwin Gray, Gambit, and M&A. We’re also grateful, of course, to the management and players at Celtic Crusaders, and it is fitting that Wales’ first Super League team will be supporting the work of a charity that uses all its funds to provide frontline nursing services in Wales. We wish the Crusaders every success in the Super League.” Alan Whiteley, a partner at M&A Solicitors, said: “M&A are delighted to co-sponsor the Crusaders/Cancer Care Cymru calendar, combining as it does support for Wales’ most recent addition to top flight sporting excellence with a wholly worthwhile and indigenous charity – it’s just disappointing that there doesn’t seem to be a market for a calendar of legal pin-ups but that’s probably a step too far!”
Geraint Rowe, a partner at Gambit Corporate Finance,
said: “Gambit Corporate Finance was pleased to work with
the Celtic Crusaders on its successful application for
the Super League and looks forward to their continued
development and success. The work of Cancer Care Cymru
assists people when they are at their most needy, and
the opportunity to support Cancer Care Cymru, whilst
continuing our involvement with the Crusaders, was an
opportunity that we could not pass up.” |
